IX FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL D'ESCACS "CIUTAT DE BANYOLES" 2006

9th Banyoles International Chess Tournament, from the 17th to the 24th August 2006

The swiss grandmaster Viktor Korchnoi (75 y.o.) showed his experience and got the triumph in the ninth edition of Banyoles International Tournament, in a last round absolutely apotheosic due to the equality between the favourites. At the end of the nine rounds, six players finished tied in the first place with seven points. The tiebrake gave the victory to Korchnoi that in the last round he knew to defend perfectly his position playing with black against the swedish Tiger Hillarp Persson, that with a victory he would have won the final absolute victory.

In the final standings, Sergei Tiviakov, that he started as a top one, finished second, follwed by Yury Lapshun (USA), Hillarp Person (Sweden), Eduard Fomichenko (Russia), and Jens Kristensen (Denmark). The Jordi and Joan Fluvia brothers, from Tordera, achieved to end the tournament between the ten firstly classified, and Jordi Cuadras (Figueres) was seventh.

The total of classified players has been of 129 from 133 registered players initially

Norm of I.M. got by Ana Matnadze (Georgia) and norm of WIM got by indian player Sai Meera. It was a pity that the french I.M. Nicolas Giffard didn't get the norm of G.M. due that he needed one point more.

From the 2nd to the 8th round, only two games have been won by not presentation in the A group (due to an accident and illness) and one not presentation in the B Group (illness). It shows the great interest than the tournament has taken for all the participants.

In the B group the french players led the tournament but finally the catalan player from Figueres Victor Lillo was the winner with 7,5 points, obtaining an advantage of half point over the followers, all them from France: Timothee Pierre, Alexis Meniere and Alexis Hab, with 6,5 points followed by: Pierre Villegas (France), Adria Martorell (Malgrat), Elias Muratet (Banyoles), Hugues Lambert (Françe), Juan Ignacio Saez (Euskadi), Marie Cheype (France) and Angel Blanch, until 91 players classified from the 94 registered.
