This year we have the pleasure of have one of the main figures of the world-wide chess: the English Nigel Short.
The chess-live of Nigel starts when, as a 10 year old, he defeats Viktor Korchnoi, in a simultaneous exhibition.
In 1993, Nigel Short earns the right to meet defending World Champion, Garry Kasparov, after defeating in the phases previous to Jan Timman and Anatoly Karpov among other. At the final, played in London, he was defeated convincingly by Kasparov (+6,-1,=14).
He reached his numerical peak ELO rating of 2712 in April 2004. In the January 2007 FIDE rating list, Short was ranked number 23 in the world with an Elo rating of 2691.
